Going to a restaurant


On this page we will learn simple Japanese words and phrases about going to a restaurant. The Japanese word for restaurant is adapted from English and is Resutoran. When you first enter a restaurant, it is common in more casual places for the whole staff to shout out 'Irrashaimase', which means welcome. In the example below, the person is ordering 'A Lunch'. In Japan at lunchtime, it is common for restaurants to offer lunch sets. They may offer a choice of 3, and they will be called 'A Lunch', 'B Lunch' and 'C Lunch'. 

In a Japanese restaurant, the waiter will bring a glass of water with some ice in it when you sit down. The Japanese word for water is Mizu. You will also get a 'Oshibori' towel for cleaning your hands but some people wipe their faces,too.
Many places have a button to call the waiter. In Japan, it is not customary to leave a tip. When you are finished, you have to bring your own bill to the counter to pay. Most places give you small bowls and forks and spoons without asking if you have kids.
