Growing vegetables is a popular pastime for older Japanese. As many people live in apartments or in houses without a garden, people rent some land to have their own vegetable patch. In Japanese vegetable patch is Hatake. There are some vegetables that are grown in Japan but are not popular elsewhere, for example Gobou and Renkon. Gobou is edible burdock root. It doesn't look very nice to eat but it has low calories and is full of fibre to clean your stomach. Renkon also an edible root, from the lotus tree and is also full of fibre, vitamins and nutrients.
