On this page we will learn simple Japanese words and phrases related to seasons. The Japanese word for season is Kisetsu.

The Japanese word for winter is Fuyu. There are the events at Shogatsu (the end of the year), like Omisoka (last day of the year), and Hatsumoude (the first visit to the shrine).

Once the days become longer and the weather becomes warmer, spring is coming. The Japanese word for spring is HaruSetsubun is the word for the day before the beginning of a season, but usually is used for the day before the beginning of spring. As part of the celebrations many people perform Mamemaki where soybeans are thrown out of the front door or at a person wearing a demon mask, shouting "Fuku wa uchi" which is supposed to purify the house, drive away evil spirits and bring good luck. People eat the number of beans according to their age for good health and good luck. Spring is also well known for the Hinamatsuri (dolls festival for girls), Hanami, watching the beautiful cherry tree blossoms and for children, the Nyugakushiki - the ceremony for starting the new school year.

The Japanese word for summer is Natsu. In Summer there are many Matsuri or festivals to spend time in the warm weather. In August there is Obon. The Bon festival is when many people return to their hometowns and remember their ancestors. Throughout Summer there are many fireworks (Hanabi), especially near the river and seaside.

The Japanese word for Autumn is Aki. Autumn is well known for Kouyou, the time when the leaves start to change colour and many people take a trip to the mountains to see the spectactular colours. Many foods are very delicious in Autumn and it is known as the time of "Shokuyoku no aki" when people enjoy the fresh foods of the season. It literally means the appetite of Autumn.
